Latest Market Alert | 23 July 2026
Executive Summary
Companies House and the Insolvency Service have highlighted the continuing misuse of UK-registered companies for suspected fraud, money laundering and organised crime. Recent enforcement activity under Operation Hammerhead resulted in approximately 11,500 companies being removed from the register, while around 41,000 companies were identified with suspected links to organised criminal networks, including fraud and money laundering.
The findings reinforce an important commercial message: registration at Companies House should never be treated as proof that a business is genuine, financially sound or properly verified.
Why it Matters
Many organisations rely on Companies House information when onboarding suppliers, customers, borrowers, introducers and investment partners. While reforms under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act have strengthened Companies House powers, businesses should continue to undertake independent due diligence.
During 2025–26, Companies House shared intelligence and made 231 referrals to the Insolvency Service, leading to investigations and enforcement action against suspected criminal activity.
UK Impact
Businesses should exercise additional caution where counterparties:
- operate from shared or virtual office addresses;
- have recently changed directors or ownership;
- have limited filing histories;
- provide banking details inconsistent with the contracting entity;
- cannot demonstrate genuine trading operations.
Global Impact
Many overseas organisations assume UK incorporation represents Government approval or financial credibility. The latest enforcement activity demonstrates that independent verification remains essential for international transactions.
Our View
Companies House should be viewed as the starting point—not the conclusion—of commercial due diligence.
Recommended actions:
- Verify directors and beneficial owners independently.
- Confirm bank-account details before making payments.
- Check operational presence beyond the registered office.
- Screen counterparties for sanctions, insolvency and adverse media.
- Apply enhanced due diligence to higher-risk counterparties.
- Independently verify any payment instruction changes.
