Latest Market Alert | 23 July 2026
Executive Summary
The European Commission has adopted updated measures supporting implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), including revised product scope and technical guidance.
The principal obligations are due to apply from 30 December 2026 for medium and large businesses placing covered products on the EU market or exporting them from the EU. Newly added product categories are expected to follow from 30 December 2027.
Why it Matters
The Regulation requires businesses to demonstrate that relevant commodities—including cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy and wood—are deforestation-free, legally produced and supported by appropriate due diligence.
Companies unable to provide reliable supply-chain information risk:
- shipment delays;
- loss of EU customers;
- contractual disputes;
- increased compliance costs;
- reputational damage.
UK Impact
Although UK businesses are not directly regulated by the EUDR, exporters supplying European customers may increasingly be required to provide origin records, geolocation data and supply-chain evidence to support their customers’ compliance obligations.
Global Impact
The Regulation will influence supply chains well beyond Europe, with producers and suppliers worldwide expected to provide increasingly detailed traceability information before products can enter the EU market.
Our View
This should be viewed as a supply-chain governance issue rather than simply an environmental compliance exercise.
Recommended actions:
- Identify products within EUDR scope.
- Map supply chains to source locations.
- Obtain supplier origin and legality evidence.
- Review procurement contracts and compliance clauses.
- Strengthen supplier due diligence.
- Test reporting systems before implementation.
Risk Indicator: Medium / High
